Supporting businesses to reduce and eliminate single use plastic in Fleet Hampshire
We are delighted to announce that Fleet BID is working in partnership with Hart District Council as part of their 12-month pilot initiative with Sky Ocean Rescue to make Hart single use plastic (SUP) free.
Fleet BID will be working closely with zero waste retailer, Scoop, to help businesses in Fleet Hampshire to make simple changes towards becoming single use plastic free.
This is part of Hart District Council’s broader initiative working closely with council operational staff, local businesses and schools with the objective of educating how our lives can impact on ocean health and supporting Hart residents in reducing and disposing of SUPs. Hart District Council are working closely with local community as well as Fleet BID and other business groups to reduce the use of SUP products in Hart.
The initiative is aimed at reducing the significant threat to wildlife and the environment caused by using disposable SUPs and is the first joint initiative of its kind. It is intended that the work at Hart could form the basis of an initiative that could then be rolled out to other local authorities.
Sky Ocean Rescue launched on 24 January 2017 and aims to shine a spotlight on the issues affecting ocean health. Its aim is to find innovative solutions to the problem of ocean plastics and inspire people to make small everyday changes that collectively make a huge difference.
Councillor Alan Oliver, Cabinet member for Environment at Hart District Council said: “Single Use plastic poses an enormous threat to our environment and we are delighted to be the first local authority to work in partnership with Sky Ocean Rescue to tackle this issue across our district. Changes have already been made at the Hart District Council offices including the removal of all single use plastic cups and stirrers from within the council, and each member of staff has been issued with a metal refillable bottle. A water fountain has been installed in the main reception area and the site has been registered as a refill station for those using refillable bottles.”
